Weighted GPA Calculator — AP, Honors & IB Boost

Took the harder classes? You deserve the harder numbers. A weighted GPA rewards you for AP, Honors, and IB courses by adding bonus grade points — so an A in AP Chemistry can be worth a 5.0 instead of a 4.0.

This calculator handles the whole thing: add each course, pick its level (Regular, Honors, or AP/IB), enter the grade and credits, and watch your weighted GPA appear on the 5.0 scale. It also shows your unweighted equivalent, so you can see exactly what the boost is worth.

How the bonus works

Course level Bonus An “A” becomes
Regular +0.0 4.0
Honors +0.5 4.5
AP / IB +1.0 5.0

The same bump applies down the scale: a B in an AP class is worth 4.0 — the same as an A in a regular class. That’s the reward for the extra work.

Weighted vs. unweighted — which do colleges see?

Most colleges recalculate your GPA using their own formula, but they absolutely notice course rigor. A 4.2 weighted GPA with five AP classes often impresses more than a 4.0 unweighted with none. When a college asks for your GPA, report whichever version your school puts on your transcript — and if they ask specifically, now you have both.

One honest note: weighting systems vary by school and even by district. Some schools cap the scale, some weight only AP. This calculator uses the most common system (+0.5 Honors, +1.0 AP/IB, 5.0 cap). If your school does it differently, treat this as a close estimate.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good weighted GPA?
Anything above 4.0 means you’re earning bonus points — that’s already a win. Competitive applicants to selective schools often land between 4.2 and 4.6.

Can my weighted GPA go down if I take AP classes?
Only if the grades drop a lot. A B in AP (4.0 weighted) equals an A in a regular class — so you have cushion. A C in AP (3.0) is where it starts to hurt.
