How the conversion works
The standard conversion is beautifully simple:
Percentage = (GPA ÷ Scale) × 100
So a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale → 87.5%. A 4.2 on a 5.0 scale → 84%. The math is linear, which means every tenth of a GPA point is worth exactly 2.5 percentage points on a 4.0 scale.
The honest fine print
Here’s what most converters won’t tell you: there is no single official GPA-to-percentage formula. Schools and countries convert differently — some use lookup tables instead of math, India’s 10-point CGPA system multiplies by 9.5, and the UK uses degree classifications instead of either.
So treat the result as a solid estimate, not a legal document. If you’re filling out an application, always check whether they want your official conversion — many schools publish their own table, and that’s the one that counts.

Frequently asked questions
What is a 3.0 GPA in percentage?
75% on the standard 4.0 linear conversion.
Why do different converters give different answers?
Because there’s no universal standard — some use linear math (like this one), others use banded lookup tables. Both are “correct” within their own system.
