Pakistan Grading System: Divisions, HEC GPA & CGPA

Pakistan Grading System Explained

Pakistan uses percentages and divisions at school and college board level (SSC/HSSC), while universities regulated by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) use a 4.0 GPA scale — familiar to anyone who knows the American system. First division starts at 60%, and the HEC scale runs from A+ (4.0) down to F. Here is how every stage works.

Board Exams: SSC and HSSC

Secondary School Certificate (SSC, Class 10) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC, Class 12) exams are run by regional boards (BISE) and reported as raw marks and percentages. Results are also described in divisions, which still carry real weight in admissions and government job applications.

Division Percentage What it means
First division 60% and above Strong — the benchmark for good colleges and jobs
Second division 45–59% Average pass
Third division 33–44% Minimum pass
Fail Below 33% Did not pass

The pass mark is 33% at most boards, though some boards and institutions set it at 40%. A “first division” (60%+) is the line that matters: it’s the minimum for most reputable universities, scholarships, and public-sector jobs. Some boards also award letter grades alongside marks, but percentages and divisions remain the official currency.

HSSC (Intermediate) results are the gateway to university. Pre-medical and pre-engineering students typically need 80–90%+ for competitive public universities, while the percentage needed varies widely between institutions and programmes.

University admissions rarely use board marks alone. Most institutions compute a merit aggregate — commonly 70% of your HSSC marks plus 30% of an entry test (such as MDCAT for medical or ECAT/NET for engineering), though the exact formula varies by university. This means a strong board percentage gets you in the door, but the entry test decides the final merit list. Students splitting effort between board exams and test prep should know their target university’s formula before allocating study hours.

Universities: The HEC 4.0 GPA Scale

Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission standardizes a 4.0 GPA scale for universities. It’s close to the American scale, but with finer bands — Pakistani transcripts distinguish A+, A, B+, B, and so on, each mapped to a specific grade point.

Grade Marks Grade point
A+ 85–100 4.0
A 80–84 3.7
B+ 75–79 3.3
B 71–74 3.0
B− 68–70 2.7
C+ 64–67 2.3
C 61–63 2.0
C− 58–60 1.7
D+ 54–57 1.3
D 50–53 1.0
F Below 50 0.0

These bands are the widely documented HEC framework, but individual universities adjust them. Some institutions shift the boundaries a few points, use fewer sub-bands (A, B, C without pluses and minuses), or set the pass at 60% instead of 50% for certain programmes. Always go by your own university’s published grading scheme — that’s what appears on your transcript and what employers will check.

A CGPA of 3.0+ is generally considered good, 3.5+ strong, and 3.7+ excellent — the thresholds for most scholarships, dean’s lists, and competitive graduate admissions. Many programmes require a minimum 2.0 CGPA to graduate.

Semester GPA vs CGPA

Pakistani universities run on a semester system, and two different averages appear on your record:

  • SGPA (Semester GPA) — your grade-point average for a single semester, weighted by each course’s credit hours.
  • CGPA (Cumulative GPA) — your running average across all completed semesters, weighted by credit hours. This is the number on your final degree.

Both are credit-weighted: a 4-credit course moves your average twice as much as a 2-credit course. So a B+ in a heavy core course hurts more than an A+ in a light elective helps — plan your effort accordingly. If you’re chasing a CGPA target, our GPA calculator does the credit-weighted math for you.

Worked SGPA example: suppose you take three courses in a semester — a 4-credit course where you earn A (3.7), a 3-credit course where you earn B+ (3.3), and a 2-credit lab where you earn A+ (4.0). Multiply grade points by credits: (3.7 × 4) + (3.3 × 3) + (4.0 × 2) = 14.8 + 9.9 + 8.0 = 32.7. Divide by total credits: 32.7 ÷ 9 ≈ 3.63 SGPA. Your CGPA then blends this semester with every previous one, so early low semesters take several strong semesters to wash out — start strong if you can.

Converting Pakistan Grades: A Worked Example

Example 1 — board marks to division: A student scores 517 out of 1100 in HSSC.

  1. Find the percentage: 517 ÷ 1100 × 100 ≈ 47.0%.
  2. Read the division: 47% falls in the 45–59 band → Second division.

Example 2 — marks to HEC grade point: A student scores 78% in a university course.

  1. Find the band: 78% falls in the 75–79 band → B+.
  2. Grade point: B+ = 3.3 toward the SGPA.

Example 3 — rough US comparison: a CGPA of 3.4 in Pakistan ≈ a 3.4 GPA in the US, since both run on 4.0 — but the percentage behind it differs (a Pakistani 3.4 typically reflects marks in the high 70s, where an American 3.4 often reflects marks in the high 80s). Credential evaluators account for this; don’t convert by percentage alone.

One more official route worth knowing: if you studied under a foreign system (O/A levels, IB, American high school) and need admission in Pakistan, the IBCC issues an equivalence certificate converting your grades to Pakistani marks and division. Universities ask for this document at admission time, so get it processed before merit lists close — don’t leave it to the last week.

Pakistan Grading System FAQs

What is a good CGPA in Pakistan?

On the HEC 4.0 scale, 3.0+ is good, 3.5+ is strong, and 3.7+ is excellent. Most scholarships, dean’s list honours, and competitive MS/MPhil admissions look for 3.5+. A 2.0 is typically the minimum to stay in good standing and graduate.

What percentage is first division in Pakistan?

60% and above is first division in SSC/HSSC board exams. It’s the key benchmark for university admissions, scholarships, and government jobs. Second division is 45–59%, and third division is 33–44%.

Is Pakistan’s GPA system the same as America’s?

Very close — both run on a 4.0 scale with similar grade points (A+ = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on). The difference is in the percentage bands behind the grades: Pakistan’s A+ starts at 85%, while many US schools set A at 90–93%. The grade points transfer cleanly; the percentages don’t.

What is the passing marks percentage in Pakistan boards?

33% at most BISE boards for SSC and HSSC, though some boards and institutions require 40%. At HEC-regulated universities, the pass is typically a D (50%+) under the standard framework — but check your university’s own rules, as some set higher bars.

How is CGPA calculated in Pakistani universities?

Multiply each course’s grade point by its credit hours, add those up, and divide by total credit hours — across all semesters for CGPA, or one semester for SGPA. Our grade percentage calculator can help you figure out what marks you need on remaining exams, starting from the Grade Calculator homepage.

Do all Pakistani universities use the HEC scale?

HEC provides the standard framework and most universities follow it, but individual institutions adjust the bands — some merge the plus/minus grades, shift boundaries by a few marks, or set different pass thresholds. Your university’s published scheme is the only one that officially counts.
